Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association

History

The inaugural Meeting of the VSDCA was held on August 24, 1908 at the Young & Jacksons Hotel (Cnr. Flinders & Swanston Streets Melbourne).

Colonel WB Pleasents (Hawthorn) was appointed Chairman (pro-tem) and RC Coster (Malvern) was appointed Secretary (Pro-tem) at that Meeting.

The Original Eight Clubs and Delegates were:-

Brighton - SF Hammond & JB Egglestone
Caulfield - CD Lloyd & PJ Willison
Coburg - Cr.E James & CA Kell
Elsternwick - AJ McDonald & E Wilson
Hawthorn - Col. WB Pleasents & HP Jones
Malvern - RC Coster & HW Shepherd
Port Melbourne - T Testro & T Purvis (Snr.)
Williamstown - A Mills & P Watson

Before the Original Meeting, a recently established District Cricket competition organised clubs into 1st and 2nd grades, with a promotion and relegation system. That system quickly lost support and the Victorian Cricket Association proposed separate District and Sub-District competitions.

The eight Sub-District clubs accepted the VCA arrangement in principle at that meeting in 1908 and formed the VSDCA (or Sub-Association). The relationship between the two separate but related competitions and administrations had begun.

The VSDCA clubs first competed for the premiership in the Sub-Association's inaugural 1908 / 1909 season.

During the subsequent 100 seasons 40 clubs have been members of the VSDCA and 10 of those clubs have progressed to Victorian Premier Cricket.
